these new discussions. >> established in 1932, the washington redskins have been professional sports darling of the d.c. area. but some say the term redskins is anything but cute. >> the first time i heard the name, i was surprised someone would think that would be a good name for a team. >> the smithsonian's national museum of american indian is discussing that today. they are hosting a day racist stereotypes in american sports. >> i just don't know. >> miss sullivan says she thinks that the team names show respect to native americans. correct there were here first. i think it is an honor to them and a lot of streets and downs have indian names. so we would have to change everything. many feel the opposite. >> i can see where it would be offensive. >> the redskins are money

makers. the team is the second most valuable franchise in the nfl valued at more than $1.5 billion. the redskins are one of the highest grossing teams in the league. many say changing the name might be bad for business. it's because of the demands of business and the reality, it probably would be another 50 years before it did change. >> today's panel will feature a wide variety of speakers from the n.c.a.a. proposalto those with an the c connection to the native american community. we will have more on this, this evening. >> in the northeast people are anxiously keeping an eye on the skies. road crews are getting ready for a storm system that could rival the blizzard of 1978. that system brought several feet of snow. later in the newscast will take a look back at the that monster storm. we know that all the snow is making adam caskey jealous.

we have nothing in our forecasts even close to what the northeast is expecting. is here to tell us what we are looking at. >> i was communicating with meteorologist friends in new england and telling them i am jealous of this nor'easter. but we had our time in three years ago. we had over 30 inches of snow at dulles airport in the snowmageddon. let's talk about what's happening. here's the time lapse over arlington this morning, clouds. this is in advance of two systems that are coming together to form the nor'easter. gether yet. one of them is to our south and another to the northwest. we are seeing clouds are ready. mostly cloudy andtoday. it's 34 degrees currently in gaithersburg and it's at the freezing mark in frederick. a few snow showers in chicago today. the big problem will be new york connecticut, boston

maine all of new england starting tomorrow and into saturday. i will have the snowfall forecast for them and for us, coming up. >> a popular d.c. grocery store and caterer has been shut down after health inspectors found numerous violations. everything from rats and roaches to mold and mouse droppings. more from john gonzalez. >> noncompliance with regulations pose an imminent health risks to the public. that's what the sign states on the front door of the popular restaurant. >> i'm surprised. it is a high end place. >> it has been shut down in georgetown until further notice by the health department after an inspection revealed infestation of rats roaches and mice. >> i'm here frequently, so it's scary. >> the doors are locked, but a number of employees are busy at

work at the cafe. jars and boxes of food still sits on the shelves. shocked customers have been greeted by a large orange design. >> its for the best -- the best of the best is what the public has the impression of. >> and inspection recently found 14 violations and seven considered critical, among them food items left open and improperly refrigerated as well as no certified food production manager and unclean food areas. >> i don't know how much you can control the rodents, but it's kind of creepy. >> it can reopen as soon as it pays every inspection fee of up to $400, fix the problems, and passes a new inspection. the question is will the customers return? >> now i'm very hungry. >> fauquier following a developing story as police investigate what appears to be a targeted attack against a

subway shop owner in lorton. someone firebombed the shop seriously injuring the owner. it's not the first time the shop has been hit. vandals damaged the business and it was set on fire within the past three years. officials are saying the latest attack did $100,000 in damage. police in annapolis have charged a woman in the death of kurt two year-old daughter. chelsea bruce is behind bars facing charges of first-degree and second-degree murder. -- chelsea booth. a neighbor reported the daughter had not been seen in several days and police were called. they determined to kill their daughter and disposed of the body. she's been held without bond. the man convicted of killing a federal intern chandra levy will return to court this afternoon. ingmar guandique's orders have requested a new trial based on questions about the credibility of a key prosecution witness in his 2010 trial. a judge has held closed-door hearings on the issue but will not release information for safety reasons. she disappeared in 2001.

her remains relator found in rock creek park the next year. a new survey showing how americans feel about gun-control reform and women in combat. the poll found 92% of americans surveyed support universal done background checks. 52% support stricter nationwide gun control laws. 56% support a ban on assault weapons and a ban on high- capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds. 72% of americans support the idea of women in combat. on capitol hill today, john brennan is expected to face tough questions about the u.s. drone program. he is president obama's nominee to head the cia. his confirmation hearing when the white house faces increasing criticism for its drawn attack policy. as the president counter- terrorism chief, he was a big force behind the strikes. white house is backing the program.

courts are counter-terrorism efforts are designed including our targeted efforts to limit civilian casualties. >> a main issue lawmakers came earlier this week when an unclassified memo came out. the memo said the justice department could target american citizens tied to al qaeda if it believes that they pose an imminent threat. a senate panel has postponed a vote on chuck hagel's nomination to become defense secretary. republicans were not satisfied with the information he provided during last week's confirmation hearing. they want more details about his paid speeches and his business dealings. the former nebraska senator already faced opposition for his past statements and votes on israel iran, and nuclear weapons. president obama the first lady, and vice president joe biden attended the national prayer breakfast today. nearly three cows and people this morning from 140 countries were at the nonpartisan service

at the washington hilton in northwest. president obama told lawmakers that he hopes they keep the bipartisan spirit and don't let the prayers for unity fadeaway. some positive jobs numbers out this noon. the labor department says applications for unemployment benefits are down 5000 as compared with last week. the f-word are weak-average for benefit claims is more than 350,000, lowest in five years. -- the 4-week average for benefit claims is more than 5000. lance armstrong could be the target of new legal action. who's going after him and why. and a major announcement about good morning america and anger robin roberts this morning. we will bring you that story. -- anchor. and we're looking and severe winter weather ahead in the northeast.

for former los angeles accused of gunning down several other officers in a revenge killing. or you consider yourselves under attack? greg based on the circumstances yes. >> the lapd says 33-year-old christopher jordan dorner shot two officers in riverside early tuesday. one was killed and another seriously injured. minutes later, he also shot at officers in corona. publica bullet grazed and officers said. he is believed to have sped off in a gray nissan tighten pickup truck and he's probably changing the license plates. >> his whereabouts are unknown. we consider him armed and dangerous. >> he was fired by the lapd in 2008. he allegedly left behind an online manifesto corey claims he was terminated for reporting abuses. in the manifesto he blames the

retired captain for getting him fired. "i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i am terminating yours." detectives believe the gun down the chief's daughter and her fiancee. his message also lists the names of dozens of other officers, threatening, down their families. that's who they believe he was targeting this morning. >> we are responding to a special detail to provide added protection to individuals that identified in the manifesto by the suspect. >> police say his former lapd badge has been found near san diego airport. he says the attacks will stop when lapd publicly admit his innocence. >> the northeast is bracing for one of its worst winter storms in more than the 30 years. system moving toward boston could potentially rivaled the

blizzard of 1978 which dumped more than two feet of snow on the city. some places are as many as 4.5 feet. while there are similar weather patterns, it's not quite as intense as back then. >> the 1978 blizzard stalled for quite awhile. this storm looks like it -- the storm may stall for about maybe 12 to 24 hours only. >> weather forecasting technology has vastly improved since then. meteorologist did not have computers back then. >> they didn't have some to view the calculations. basically, it forecast as far out, you would say we are expecting a lot of snow. it would not have a number range except for a proximate guesses. but it's not easy these days still. what are we looking at?

we're not going to get anything like that. >> nothing close to that. we will get a little light rain and possibly a brief mix of light snow on the backside of it. snow on the grassy areas on the mason-dixon line. i have a lot to talk about including the computer model for the snowfall in new england. snow lovers, you will be jealous of what i have to show you. jealous of new england. 38 degrees right now at reagan national cloudy skies. the clouds are getting lower in the sky as we speak. we have two systems coming together. the first one is giving us the clouds. 37 at dulles airport, 34 in manchester and hagerstown and frederick. the white indicates the clouds and a been overhead since early this morning and even some last night. let's talk about the two systems that are moving together over the middle atlantic and then offshore to really strengthen off the new england coast line and dump heavy snowfall on them.

the first system off to the midsection of the country. the southern system is over the gulf of mexico and the florida coastline. these two are merging. the upper level components are merging over the mid-atlantic and off our coastline. as they move north it will quickly identify and strengthen and have the biggest impact on new england. it's a very similar situation as to what happened here to three years ago exactly with snowmageddon. dulles airport had about 33 inches of snow from the first round of snowmageddon. peers are predicted snowfall. basically along the mason-dixon line some folks in southern pennsylvania could see four inches of snow. new york city, may be 11 inches. look at this. western massachusetts, that's where the computer models are giving over 30 inches of snow possibly from this system.

this is just one run of our computer model. it's not the only computer model that is indicating the possibility of 300 more inches of snow around the boston area. unbelievable. that is epic. it does not come together yet but just the possibility. computer models have been showing that for few days. around here tomorrow morning light rain to start the day especially along and east of 95. on the backside of this system i expect a little touch of light snow or a light wintry mix. you see the purple and pink. in washington and especially northward on the grassy surface is and maybe a few side streets in frederick and close to the mason-dixon line you may have a brief coating of snow or sleet on the backside of the system tomorrow evening. light rain in the morning and then in the evening a little wintry mix. in light of wintry mix possible tonight, but mostly rain.

very light rain with not much moisture. talking a quarter inch of rain at most out of this system around here. tomorrow, rainfall for the morning commute especially along 95 aunties. a little touch of a wintry mix tomorrow evening, not amounting to much. the gusty wind is another thing. it will be howling in new england. you will even notice it around here late friday into saturday. this could be epics for new england. >> we will keep watching that. thanks very much. oscar is making his way around town today. that's right. the statue is on his first-ever road trips. after stopping by "good morning washington" he hit all the major landmarks including the national mall the capital, and the white house. tonight you can get your photograph taken with oscar at the hotel in arlington at 5:00 in the rosslyn area. we have all the details on

the money because of a prior settlement agreement. a connecticut couple has just been recognized as the longest married pair in the united states. john is 101 and his wife is 97. he and ann have been married 80 years. her father had arranged for her to marry another man but she and john rain off and on cee lo green new york. if what is their-rain off and on- eloped. >> she is always a cook, good mother never worked outside home. >> very sweet. the happy couple has five children, 14 grandkids 16 great-grandchildren. so nice to see.
